Journalist Joe Cantlupe states, “It may sound like a bus or train depot, but for America’s beleaguered emergency departments, the ‘transfer center’ is becoming more popular as potential relief to physicians and health facilities. And it’s a just-in-time concept, since finding a Rx for overcrowded EDs is one of the top hospital issues for the upcoming year.”
Transfer centers act as a hub for patient referrals between a healthcare system and all the clinics, hospitals, and physician offices in its region. These centers allow referring providers to make one phone call to send their patients directly from their facilities to the appropriate level of acute-care, bypassing unnecessary ED visits, and allowing patients to quickly receive the level of care they need.
ED physicians “were begging us to assist them,” said Mountain States Health Alliance’s transfer center director, Rick Newman. But now, because of the transfer center, “the ED physicians have an easy way to set up the transfers to move patients in and out the door to a higher level of care,” he says. Read more.
