Patient Throughput vs. Patient Flow
Dr. Roger Resar, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic, talks about the difference between patient throughput and patient flow and explains that throughput is the most important concept of patient flow. He asks, “Are your patient flow projects optimizing one area at the expense of another?” He also points out that if you can’t see more patients with the same number of beds then you haven’t improved flow.
