Michael Leavitt is a former Utah Governor and former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. As founder and chairman of Leavitt Partners—a consulting group advising clients in healthcare—Leavitt is actively involved in the healthcare space.  He speaks nationwide on topics regarding the future of healthcare. 

Dr. Jason Hwang

Dr. Hwang is the co-founder and Executive Director, Health Care of Innosight Institute, a not-for-profit think tank devoted to disruptive innovation. He is the coauthor of The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care with Harvard Business Professor Clayton Christensen, and the late Dr. Jerome Grossman.

Keynote: Governor Michael Leavitt

Chairman, Leavitt Partners
Former Utah Governor
Former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary

Michael O. Leavitt is the founder and Chairman of Leavitt Partners where he advises clients in the health care and food safety sectors.

In 1993, Leavitt was elected governor of Utah. He served three terms and then joined the Cabinet of President George W. Bush, serving in two positions: first as leader of the Environmental Protection Agency (2003-2005) and then as secretary of Health and Human Services (2005-2009).

With HHS, he led the implementation of the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program. The task required the design, systematization and implementation of a plan to provide 43 million seniors with a new prescription drug benefit. By the end of the first year, enrollments exceeded projections, prices were lower than projected and seniors expressed high levels of satisfaction. Leavitt  is a prominent speaker nationwide, particularly discussing the future of healthcare in America and also innvoation in healthcare.

Keynote: Dr. Jason Hwang, MD, MBA

Co-founder and Executive Director of Healthcare, Innosight Institute

Jason Hwang, is co-founder and Executive Director of Healthcare at Innosight Institute, a non-profit social innovation think tank based in Watertown, Massachusetts.  He is co-author of “The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Healthcare,” a book on disruptive innovation in healthcare, with Clayton Christensen, professor at the Harvard Business School.

In his work as an internal medicine physician, Dr. Hwang has received multiple recognitions for his clinical work.

Dr. Hwang taught as Chief Resident and clinical instructor at the University of California, Irvine until 2004 and has also served as a clinician with the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California.

Keynote: Dr. Darin Vercillo, MD

CEO and Co-founder, Central Logic

In addition to acting as the CEO for Central Logic, Dr. Vercillo is a practicing, board-certified hospitalist in the Salt Lake City area. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah and went on to a fellowship in medical informatics in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health.

Prior to founding Central Logic, he was a clinical advisor and technical developer at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Dr. Vercillo has developed and implemented numerous medical information systems to manage complex patient needs, medical education, and faculty and staff logistics. He is an active consultant on a variety of additional systems across the United States, ranging from small physician practices to very large teaching hospitals.

Deborah Kaczynski, MS

Senior Administrative Director, UPMC, Pittsburgh, PA
Faculty for IHI's Learning and Innovation Community on Improving

As an administrative director at UPMC Mercy, Kaczynski has been involved in quality and operational improvement, specializing in capacity management for the past eight years, both in day-to-day hospital operations and in a consultative role.  She helps support UPMC’s patient flow initiatives and is faculty for IHI's Learning and Innovation Community on Improving Flow Through Acute Care Settings. She has assisted several large health systems in their patient flow work, including Kaiser Permanente, Christianna, and Johns Hopkins.

Kaczynski co-authored an article on patient flow which appeared in the May 2011 issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety entitled “Timeliness and Efficiency:  Using Real-Time Demand Capacity Management to Improve Hospital-wide Patient Flow”. 

Mary Longe

Director, Patient Flow, American Hospital Association

For over 20 years, Mary Longe has had her pulse on the intricacies of patient care and systems that help make that care safer and more efficient. She is the Director, Patient Flow, AHA Solutions and author of the annual Patient Flow Challenges Assessment. Longe has authored five books on health care management, and is the editor of AHA Solutions monthly e-newsletter which provides information on patient flow, patient safety, and patient engagement.
 

Christy Dempsey, MBA, BSN, RN, CNOR

Senior Vice President for Clinical Operations, Patient Flow

Christy Dempsey is a registered nurse with over 23 years of hospital experience in perioperative and emergency services management, supply chain and materials management and physician/hospital collaboration.

In her role at Press Ganey, Dempsey serves as project director and clinical expert in hospital operations consulting engagements. She has led collaborative efforts between physician and hospital leadership to improve patient flow throughout the hospital, creating 59% more inpatient capacity by smoothing the flow of elective admissions to the hospital. She also instructs facilities on ways to increase revenue while improving physician, staff and patient satisfaction.

In addition, Dempsey serves as faculty for Missouri State University’s Department of Nursing. 

Jason Wilson, MBA, RN, BSN

Director of Patient Flow Operations, Johnson City Medical Center, TN

Jason Wilson is a registered nurse and has used the experience gained from his nursing background to assist in his role as the Director of Patient Flow Operations at Johnson City Medical Center—a 500-bed magnet hospital in the Mountain States Health Alliance system. Wilson works directly with the Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President. He supervises the patient placement and throughput across the hospital, as well as directing the house supervisors, transport department, internal resource pool, large-scale clinical process/project rollouts and incident command processes and procedures. He is also responsible for the hospital discharge process and the implementation of efficient processes for discharge.

Larry Burnett, RN, MS  

Managing Director at Huron Consulting

Larry Burnett has over 29 years of healthcare experience in clinical performance improvement, operations improvement and clinical system transformation. He is a Managing Director for Huron Healthcare’s Clinical Performance Improvement solution. Burnett has an extensive background in analyzing and implementing improvements in the clinical model of care across in-patient and out-patient settings. In addition, he has held nursing positions including chief nursing officer in a large multi-hospital system, and has been involved his entire career in improving clinical processes, outcomes, and efficiencies.  

 

Andrew Ziskind, MD

Managing Director at Huron Consulting

Dr. Ziskind, an interventional cardiologist by training, has more than 25 years of experience in clinical care and academic health system leadership.  At Huron Healthcare, he leads the Clinical Solutions service line focused on building clinical performance, physician alignment and care continuum optimization.  During his career, Dr. Ziskind has developed and managed innovative primary care and specialty delivery systems; served as Vice Dean and health system VP at the University of Washington and then as President of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Group President for BJC Healthcare. Additionally, he is an authority on the implementation of strategic and operational responses to healthcare reform.

Bryan Finn, MBA and Dr. Gupreet Mander, MD

Finn is a director at St. John’s Regional Referral Center

Mander is a practicing physician and involved in the development of clinical services for St. John’s Hospital

Lake Mead NRA offers year-round recreational opportunities. Its lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. It is also home to thousands of desert plants and animals, adapted to survive in an extreme place where rain is scarce and temperatures soar. The month of May is a beautiful time to visit the Lake Mead NRA with family and friends.

This complex consists of four refuges located in southern Nevada. The Desert National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 1.5 million acres of the diverse Mojave Desert in southern Nevada. It is the largest National Wildlife Refuge in the lower 48 states. The Refuge contains six major mountain ranges. Annual rainfall ranges from less than four inches on the valley floors to over fifteen inches on the highest peaks. Located approximately 23 miles north of Las Vegas, this is a great spot for hiking and rock climbing, particularly during the month of May before the Nevada temperatures soar.
